Spatial recognition is another ability that is required for mental math. Without this ability, calculations involving a large number of digits are impossible. Consider the following four-digit addition:

Consider the following four-digit addition:

Mental math is approached by looking at the whole thing and immediately focusing on 25 and 46, which means (1) adding 2500 and 4600, which equals 7100; (2) quickly adding 8 and 5 in the mind, which equals 130; (3) finally adding 7 and 6, which equals 13; and (4) adding these three numbers in the mind, which equals 7243.

In other words, in order to produce the result of (4), you must be able to simultaneously process (1), (2), and (3). The capacity to do so is integrally linked to the development of spatial cognition.
