“(Responce) They have to learn phonics thoroughly by K3. And ask them to read books out loud. If they loose words, gently teach them.”

Japanese language proficiency is necessary for learning all subjects. To build Japanese language proficiency, we must read lots of books and build a reading habit. Some people say our academic performance in the future is proportional to the amount of reading up to age 10.

It's really important to pile lots of books on your book shelf at home, to visit libraries and to read aloud to your child for making your child to become to like reading. It also help to build their intellectual curiosities.

However, there’s an important condition to make your child reading books willingly. They must be able to read aloud words on books by themselves. Not us to read words for them. That’s the condition. Plus the flow of starting reading become different on going to a Japanese school, local Chinese school or international school.

If your child go to a Japanese school;

Japanese language match letters with reading so if your child can read Hiragana and Katakana , they can easily read books with Kanji. As usually there’s furigana over or beside Kanji.

If your child go to an international school;

English doesn’t match alphabets with their sounds so the child must learn phonics. If they have learnt phonics, they can read books by themselves and also they will read books willingly. It will help to build a reading habit. But learning phonics only at school might not enough to master phonics, so we have to check their phonics skills at home as well.

If your child go to a local Chinese school;

Of course they have to memorise Chinese characters and they have to make their efforts on memorising the characters as a daily routine.

We have to decide a main language for our child and understand the different structures of each languages to build Japanese language proficiency of them. Then practice them to pronounce Japanese words before entering primary schools. It will be the foundation to make them to be a book worm. To avoid them becoming to dislike reading, we have to check both their difficulties and eases carefully.

Also if they know how to read the word which they even don’t know the meaning, they can tell the meaning from contexts preceding and following. So they don’t need to use dictionaries to look up unknown words.
